Self-Directed Learning

Thoughts & Reflections

Kevin Kelly, the founding executive editor of Wired Magazine, published an interesting article in The New York Times Magazine special issue on education and technology. The title of the article is, “Homeschooling for the Techno Literate“.

Kelly describes, with an incredible degree of accuracy, his decision to homeschool his eighth grade son and the type of activities they employed at home.

“ “We wanted to create an ideal learning environment. For the previous seven years, our son was enrolled in challenging schools. His grades were excellent, but the amount of homework was grinding him down.” ”

The highlight of the article, apart from the articulation of technology, is his wonderful description of learning at home, which of course, could be read as learning in a Montessori school, “For the most part, learning at home is more demanding than learning in a classroom because it requires more self-direction.” That’s exactly the point of Montessori.

Montessori is about loving to learn for yourself.
