Our Parent Library.

We believe in community. It's a pillar of our school, and we hope to give back the support and encouragement that we've received. One of the ways in which we wish to strengthen and buttress our community, is through library oriented initiatives. To that end, we've introduced a library for parents, and members of the community, to check out titles at their leisure. We've also introduced a Baan Dek Reading Group, in which a monthly book will be selected and discussed. Learn more.

Our Children's Library

We love children's books. There's hardly anything better than reading with children, and seeing their sense of awe and discovery when they learn something new, or follow a story to its conclusion. Stories can be incredibly rewarding and enriching. With this in mind, we've started a Children's Library. We have a number of titles on hand, but are always looking for more. Do you have suggestions? Would you like to check out a title? Please visit our Children's Library. Learn more.

Grand Synthesis Museum

About the Museum

The Baan Dek Montessori is constantly trying to incorporate and explore different aesthetic and cultural experiences to help compliment the Montessori approach to education. Our mission is to enrich the lives of each and every one of our students in new and exciting ways. To this end, one of our latest ideas is the creation of a museum, dedicated to experiencing artwork on a regular basis. It is more apt to be considered a museum of living bodies, than a museum of stagnated ideas.
What is the Mission?

The Grand Synthesis Museum is about offering our students the opportunity to experience different artistic styles, techniques and aesthetic mediums, in a positive and enriching fashion, essentially changing the landscape of the classroom. We hope to make our walls, ceilings, floors, outside spaces, come alive and breath new life into beautiful and eager young minds. Additionally, we want to support and encourage local artists to display their visions on the walls of our school.

Children's Film Festival

Children's Film Festival.

The role of The Baan Dek Montessori, as concerns extracurricular activities and events, is to expose our students to diverse artistic mediums and cultural experiences, one of which must certainly be film. To this end, we have decided to host and sponsor an annual “Children’s Film Festival”, to accompany our already existing “Grand Synthesis Museum”. Sometimes the classroom just needs to be extended beyond the classroom, as it were, to enrich and further the development of our students, aesthetically.
History of Film Festival.

The Baan Dek Montessori sponsored the first annual Children's Film Festival in the city of Sioux Falls on June 14, 2009. The event was co-hosted by Filmdrome and Sanford Children's Hospital. The location of the film festival was the Orpheum Theater. The Baan Dek Montessori firmly believes that the cinema can play an instrumental and instructive role in the education of our students when employed properly. How best to accomplish this was our fundamental task.

Arakawa and Gins

Architects of Baan Dek

The Baan Dek Montessori is pleased to announce that the internationally acclaimed architects, Arakawa and Gins of the Architectural Body Research Foundation, have completed blueprints for The Baan Dek Montessori. The architectural plans by Arakawa and Gins will create a ‘new paradigm for Montessori school structures’ and Bobby and June George are extremely pleased to be rigorously collaborating with them on creating a structure of viability for the future of education.

The Yuma Project

In the longterm, The Baan Dek Montessori is collaborating with the revolutionary architects Arakawa and Gins in the hopes of building a community, entitled Yuma, in which the promises and consequences of the human condition can be mapped out more fully and completely. So little is actually known about our interactions with each other, with the environment and with our architectural surround and Yuma will be the place in which this research is conducted.

Start Learn Project.

Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy, is a physician of education. Trained in the medical profession, she applied her rigor and aptitude for understanding the body and placed it in the service of discovering how best to teach our children. Montessori searched tirelessly and compassionately in an effort to better appreciate the parameters of human capabilities. One hundred years later, The Baan Dek Montessori is actively investigating new means of exploring this vital and timely question.

About the Project

The ambition of the Start Learn project is to continue the research of Maria Montessori. We want to better understand the ways in which children learn. We also want to think through complicated and difficult educational questions and orient these around a new Montessori movement. The Montessori revolution in education has yet to be fully incorporated. To this end, we have conducted a number of Podcasts, Interviews and participated in a few conferences. We're also proud participants in June Books which is aimed at bringing awareness to Montessori.
