Montessori at Home
Montessori has many famous quotes about children and education. None more famous, nor more practical, than, “Help them to help themselves”. No quote or motto could be more applicable to implementing the Montessori approach to education at home. Let your child help with the daily routines of a busy household, with the dishes and dinner, with sweeping and folding clothes. There isn’t anything your child can’t do if shown and observed supportively.

Sounds. Not Names.
Concentrate on the sounds of letters, not the names of the letters. For instance, sound out a letter in a game of language, such as ‘I Spy’. “I spy with my little eye something that beings with ‘Ahh’.” Apple. Amsterdam. Astronaut. Make connections with the world around you, that you and your child are familiar with. Make it fun and interesting. While you are driving down the road, point out an object and say, “What is the first sound that you hear in...?”.

Freedom and Discipline.
Establish boundaries. Within those boundaries, permit absolute freedom. If those boundaries are crossed, then reestablish the freedom. Remember, self-discipline is learned from within the boundaries that freedom affords. This is one of the most difficult concepts to understand in Montessori education. But, it is also the most practical and helpful in terms of the establishment of freedom and self-discipline, which go hand in hand.

Strengthen the Imagination.
Never be afraid to read to your child and create stories. Have them read to you. Have them create stories. If they can’t read, help them to sound out the letters, not the names. Imagination plays a vital role in the development of your child. Encourage constructive and practical imagination and all those wonderful avenues that strengthen and enrich the foundations of life. It is through the concrete that we come to understand the abstract.
