Positive Conception of Work

Montessori Activities

Montessori fosters a positive conception of work. Instead of using the word, “play”, to describe engaging in activities, in Montessori, we employ the word, “work”. Why? The answer goes to the heart of Montessori. We want to treat children with respect. We want to treat them with dignity. In short, we take children seriously. We respect their love of learning. In turn, they come to develop an appreciation of what it means to engage in activities, with concentration and determination. Of course, the secret is, another word for “work” is “play”, or the “practice of practicing”, but it really helps to foster a positive conception of “work”. You can always try it at home as well.
