Baan Dek

Sarah Skaff

Q: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Your background, your interests, your dreams?

I was born here in Sioux Falls but grew up in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with an Elementary Education degree. Miss Jones and I ended up moving here 4 years ago as a new adventure, not knowing what to expect.

Q: How were you first introduced to Montessori?

I heard about Montessori a little during my education classes in college. Then I really got into it when I was hired here…now I’ve been to training and am a Directress!

Q: What was it about Montessori that resonated with you?

It’s such a normal way of teaching. Children should be able to learn at their own pace and be able to have interest and excitement in that learning. I really wanted to get out of public school teaching because children were being pushed to learn certain things a certain way and then tested to seek approval. That’s not how I wanted to teach.

Q: What brought you to Baan Dek?

I was working two jobs and just didn’t see a future in either of them. So I was looking online at Keloland jobs and found the Baan Dek ad and I responded. Within a week I got the position!

Q: What treats do you always say yes to?

M&Ms, anything chocolate, Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Ice cream…even though I’m lactose intolerant.

Q: What is your favorite color?

Lime green is my favorite shade of green. I love green in general.

Q: What is your favorite childhood book or movie?

Little House on the Prairie books

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to read books, crochet, and watch Netflix.

Q: What is your favorite animal and why?

My favorite animal has always been a camel, because my ancestors were camel drivers in Lebanon. But since learning to crochet, my animal has become a sheep. (I would like to own sheep someday and learn to spin wool).

Q: What did you want to be when you were little?

When I was a child I wanted to be an artist. I took private art lessons.

Q: What’s a fun fact about your life?

I’m one-quarter Lebanese and I like baking baklava.
