Baan Dek

Sonia Khanvilkar

Q: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Your background, your interests, your dreams?

I am a Physical Therapist for humans as well as Canines. I wanted to be a Vet and so my love for animals always takes me to work with animals in some or the other way. I also worked briefly as an Animal Assisted Therapist. I love books the most, and I love listening to music, going on long road trips (driving! Not as a passenger) and I love cooking, i find it very de-stressing after a long busy but fulfilling day.

My dream is to start a Montessori school for underprivileged children in India (or any underprivileged children around the world).

Q: How were you first introduced to Montessori?

I was working as a traditional preschool teacher’s assistant for 2 years when I wanted to make a change and felt like the children were not being treated as young capable adults, instead pressurized by their parents as well as teachers into achieving academic excellence without following their natural development and interests. My principal introduced me to Montessori.

Q: What was it about Montessori that resonated with you?

That each and every child is respected as an individual and followed through the course of their natural development.

Q: What brought you to Baan Dek?

I have been following Baan Dek virtually for about 2.5 years and I was drawn to the passionate team at Baan Dek who work towards creating an authentic environment for the children, following Dr.Montessori’s work and making a difference in the Montessori community.

Q: What treats do you always say yes to?

NY Cheesecake

Q: What is/are your favorite color/s?

Purple, Black and Blue. Red and green during Christmas.

Q: What is your favorite childhood book or movie?

Home Alone, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and all Enid Blyton books.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

Cooking, driving, reading, listening to music, dancing, nature photography and chilling out with close friends.

Q: What is your favorite animal and why?

I do not have one favorite animal. I love all animals and some reptiles. I have loved and grown up with and worked with dogs for a long time but I love cats a little bit more since I discovered these amazing creatures about 10 years ago and love how independent they are!

Q: What’s a fun fact about your life?

So far I would say, the most fun was when I successfully treated a paralysed Deer with Physical Therapy while I was still in my 2nd year purely based on instinct.
