Expectations in Montessori

Thoughts & Reflections

How are expectations set in Montessori? What are the expectations in Montessori? Let’s find out. Instead of creating or setting expectations for children, offering up a date at which they need to complete an assignment, or task, in Montessori, we focus on self-discovery. Take, for instance, the process of learning addition.

First of all, we’ve been inherently building up an appreciation for basic mathematical operations since the student first started school, concentrating on practical life activities, etc. Next, when we set out to work on the elements that comprise addition, it’s only after the activity has been accomplished that the student exclaims, ” I did it.” “Yes. You did it!” we respond. “We call this activity, addition.” It’s an entirely different process. Not one of expectation, but of excitement.
