Finding Independence

Sometimes it’s the simple things that matter so much. Take, for instance, this perfect scene of independence. There are at least two things to notice about this picture.

First, you’ll notice the sink. It’s just her height. It’s not too high and it’s not too short. It’s relatively easy to operate. There’s nothing cumbersome or overwhelming about it. It’s enticing and friendly.

Second, you’ll notice the activity she’s working on. She decided that one of the plants in the classroom looked a little dry, so she made the decision that it needed to be watered. It was her choice. Her impetus. No one told her what to do. She wanted to take care of the environment and found a way to do it.

You see, in Montessori, everything here is made just for her. We’re the ones that are out of place. How do you create independence for children? By affording them opportunities. By creating the right environment.
