From Home to School

Thoughts & Reflections

There are a number of helpful guides on how best to transition from home to school. We thought we would take this opportunity to put together a collection of our eight most helpful points that we have learned from our experiences at Baan Dek.

1. Positivity: When you speak about school, speak about it in positive terms. In Montessori, a positive conception of work is fostered, one that is committed and enthusiastic. Children are excited to go to school, and they’ll sense your enthusiasm too.

2. Consistency: One of the most important things for children is consistency. They thrive off of routine, as it offers them stability and confidence, a sense of strength in their relationship to the world. Try to establish a routine that works for your family.

3. Schedule: Consistency and routine could be sisters. By schedule, however, we mean: try to offer your child an adequate period of time to sleep, with a regular bedtime. When they arrive at school the next day, they will be relaxed and eager to start the day.

4. Preparation: Let your child help you prepare for the next day. Whether it’s letting them set out their clothes for the morning, or allowing them to assist with the preparation of their lunch box, children love the responsibilities they are given. And, it builds their independence!

5. Communication: Ensure that you keep your child apace of any changes to their daily activities. If there is a change in their routine, let them know by explaining the situation and providing reassurance. “Your mother will pick you up today.”

6. Departure: We recommend that you ensure a prompt and cheerful drop off with your child. Allow them to enter the classroom with confidence, and your reassurance. Lengthy drop offs can cause confusion and unease.

7. Attention: While you are with your child, provide them with your full and undivided attention, especially during pick up and drop off times. We recommend that you are not on the phone during this time, as it is disruptive for your child.

8. On-Time: One of our strongest suggestions is to ensure that you arrive to school in a timely fashion. This is not for the convenience of the school, but for the benefit of your child. Late arrivals can interrupt routines, and disrupt the classroom that’s already in progress.
