We recently sat down with Charlotte Wood, our new directress, to discuss how Montessori implements the use of sounds in the classroom. As opposed to letter names, in Montessori, we concentrate on letter sounds. The reason behind this is that, at this early, formative period of development, children acquire an appreciation of language through the environment.

Essentially, the first thing they come to understand is our voice, and the enunciations. Once the children have grasped a concrete understand, we then transition to a more abstract appreciation, which is where the letter names and symbols come into play.
