Baan Dek

Carla Sullivan

Q: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Your background, your interests, your dreams?

A: I am from a little island in the Caribbean called Puerto Rico. I graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Decided that Puerto Rico wasn’t the best place for me and my fiancé to live, so we did an extensive research on where to live and found out that South Dakota is one of the happiest states, so we said, why not? Packed our bags and left everything behind. I like adventure, exploring new places and just having new experiences in life. I dream of traveling the world a lot, I want to see so much out there and so by working hard I hope that I can achieve that.

Q: How were you first introduced to Montessori?

A: I was introduced to Montessori by a job advertisement. I had heard the term back home, but never really knew what it was, until I applied to work at the Baan Dek.

Q: What was it about Montessori that resonated with you?

A: I loved the idea of children getting to make their own choices and letting them be independent. It is something that we definitely need to teach children, because life is tough and if they learn how to deal and cope with certain situations from a very young age when they become adults it won’t be so difficult to find a solution to certain conflicts.

Q: What brought you to Baan Dek?

A: Since I recently moved here, I was searching for a job in order to get on my feet. I saw the ad for Assistant Guide and I liked the idea of working with kids and also it is exciting to see what our future generation holds.

Q: What is your favorite part of your day at Baan Dek?

A: I enjoy the playground break, because there you get to see who they really are and who they like to hang out with. So you get to see lots of social interaction, whereas in the classroom it’s more about developing certain skills in an individual way.

Q: What is your favorite life quote?

A: I don’t have a favorite quote per se, but I tend to say a lot: go with the flow and just follow where life takes you. And I am currently living by that.

Q: What are your favorite colors?

A: I love blue and yellow.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

A: I enjoy my free time by either watching series, movies or gaming with my fiancé and our friends. I also like to go out and just ride through the city.

Q: What is your favorite animal and why?

A: My favorite animal is the cat. I love it’s beauty and how independent they are.

Q: What’s a fun fact about your life?

A: I have a very particular case of synesthesia, I can smell the music that comes from a music box. Not your everyday fun fact!
