Baan Dek

Charlotte Snyder

Q: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Your background, your interests, your dreams?

I grew up in California and had no inclination I’d ever leave, but I’ve been here since 2011! I started college as a vocal performance major, but I discovered I didn’t want the lifestyle that being a professional singer demands. I changed to Religious Studies, and took coursework with an emphasis in shared stories. I loved all the history, anthropology, psychology, science, world perspective, and discussion these courses included.

My interests include Big Conversations and Learning. I like to travel and to make lists. I’m learning to enjoy writing, and I always like pushing myself. I believe in kindling curiosity and connection. I am a passionate advocate. I’m an Enneagram 1, an older sister, and I love helping adults support children.

Q: How were you first introduced to Montessori?

I went to a Montessori Primary and Elementary school. I am discovering new ways every day in which that foundational education experience formed my perspective.

Q: What was it about Montessori that resonated with you?

I kind of thought this is how everyone understood the world. It wasn’t until I was in High School, when people asked questions in Geometry class that seemed like logical answers to me, that I understood how different my early education was, and how deeply it affected my whole life.

When I was figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up, I was so grateful for my Montessori education. I found myself teaching in every job I had, whether or not that was the intent of the role! I wanted to pay it forward, to perhaps give this gift to a child, this ability to think about things in the grand scope.

Q: What brought you to Baan Dek?

I can hardly believe it’s been 14 years! I never expected to be here this long, and now I can never imagine leaving. I’ve completely fallen in love with life at Baan Dek and in Sioux Falls.

I was so inspired by the energy and forward-thinking I was met with at Baan Dek. This passion has persisted, and I’m thrilled to be part of this community that always pushes me.

Q: What treats do you always say yes to?

Peppermint ice cream and French Silk Pie.

Q: What is your favorite color?

Rainbow, or glitter.

Q: What is your favorite childhood book or movie?

I really liked the Boxcar Children and Baby-Sitters Club. I still like to read books in a series.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to knit, sew, take yoga and barre classes, listen to books and podcasts, garden, and DIY house projects.

Q: What is your favorite animal and why?

Bees. They’re so lovely, and we need them!

Q: What did you want to be when you were little?

I was definitely going to grow up to be a soccer player and singer.

Q: What’s a fun fact about your life?

Prior to coming to Baan Dek, I lived in Germany, which had always been a dream!
